The department's research activities focus on our traditional strengths, such as research on the use of alternative fuels in combustion engines, optical spray measurement and the analysis of measures to reduce engine out emissions from large and marine engines. We are currently investigating injection strategies, combustion control, exhaust gas treatment and the development of thermodynamical models for future engine control algorithms.

The department aims to further the research of the use of low carbon and carbon neutral fuels such as biodiesel, methane hydrogen and ammonia and to drastically lower engine exhaust emissions. A further goal of the department is to optimise the combustion in large diesel  and dual fuel engines running in gas mode or using heavy fuel oil.

BMBF- TransHyDE-Project Campfire

BMBF- TransHyDE-Project Campfire

The aim of the TransHyDE-Project Campfire is to test the potential of using ammonia for hydrogen transport. The reccovery of hydrogen from ammonia still requires much research, and the project Campfire can rely on existing results from the TransHyDE-research association to master this process efficiently. The goals of the project are to synthesise ammonia from hydrogen, use this for transport and then crack the ammonia to create forming gas, a mix of hydrogen and nitrogen which can be used as an engine fuel. Campfire will also use demonstrators for centralised and decentralised use of ammonia and for the logistical structures necessary for the import and distribution of ammonia.

Rostock University's Department of Piston Machinery and Combustion Engines (LKV) is contributing to the Campfire 08_2 section of the project, working together with partners from industry and research to investigate combustion concepts for hydrogen in marine engine applications.

Engine Test Bed Simulation Platform

Engine Test Bed Simulation Platform

A modern Engine Test Bed Simulation Platform was commisioned on the 15th of September 2021 with the support of European funds for regional development ( Europäischen Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung (EFRE)). The simulation platform is an enhancement for our existing modern test bed control systems.
