The department of Piston Machinery and Internal Combustion Engines is divided into three working groups:

• ‘Engine Testing’
  • Description of the effects of fuel variation on the combustion process, performance and emissions of engines
  • Development of new combustion processes
  • Investigation of wear behaviour under specific boundary conditions
• ‘Injection and Mixture Formation’ working group
  • Analysis of fuel spray for distillate fuels up to heavy fuel oil
  • Component analysis
  • Development of new measurement methods
• ‘Fuels and Lubricants’ working group
  • Development, analysis and standard-compliant determination of fuel and lubricant characteristics
  • Extensive experience with biofuels and other alternative fuels
  • Support for engine testing and root cause analysis for internal and external damage cases
